Alex Ninovic opened the FIA Formula Regional European Championship in style, setting the pace in Friday morning’s 50-minute free practice.
The Australian driver for Rodin Motorsport posted the best time of 1:25.590 with just under seven minutes remaining in the session.
Improving late on to secure second place, just 0.084 seconds off the top spot, was Sebastian Wheldon of MP Motorsport, who clocked a 1:25.674. He was followed by team-mate Alexander Abkhazava, less than two tenths adrift, having briefly led the session in its early stages.
With the top 23 out of 30 drivers covered by less than one second, completing the top five were Reno Francot – who had spent a significant portion of the session at the top of the timesheets with the leading CL Motorsport entry – and Kean Nakamura-Berta of Prema Racing.
Sixth overall was reigning French F4 Championship champion Alexandre Munoz. The 16-year-old ART Grand Prix driver emerged as the fastest Rookie, edging Emanuele Olivieri (R-ace GP) by just over a tenth. Prema Racing driver Tomass Stolcermanis rounded out the top three.
Attention now turns to the first qualifying session, scheduled from 17:20 to 17:55, with drivers split into two groups. Qualifying will be streamed live on the championship’s official YouTube channel, @fiaformularegionaleu.
