In the same Red Bull Ring weekend that marked the beginning of a new era for the FIA Formula Regional European Championship, Zhenrui Chi was officially confirmed as a member of the Aston Martin Aramco Driver Academy.
The MP Motorsport driver, who turned 17 at the end of March, is embarking on his first full season in the series, having already impressed in the 2025 Italian F4 Championship, where he claimed a victory at Monza and secured four podiums.
In Austria, Zhenrui Chi opened his weekend with a fourth-place finish in the first of three races, before following it up with fifth place in Race 2, securing a haul of valuable points.
When did you first start racing in Europe?
I started racing in Europe when I was about ten. Before that, I began karting in China at the age of five.
Where were you born and raised?
I was born in the Shanghai area in China, but I am currently based in Desenzano del Garda, Italy. Many drivers live there because of karting. It’s a great place, with the lake and good connections to the airport.
So, do you speak Italian?
No, just a few words.
Aside from racing, which is your main focus, are you also continuing your studies?
Yes, I am continuing my studies alongside racing. I attend an international school about 20 minutes from my home. I also play a bit of golf and padel, along with other sports.
Did your passion for racing come from someone in your family?
My dad was the one who first sparked my interest. From there, I developed the same passion, and when I wanted to start racing, he was fully supportive.
Let’s talk about the new Tatuus T-326 and the changes this season, including the introduction of the Race Mode system. What are your thoughts?
For me, the new car and the Race Mode system have definitely made the racing more exciting. I’d say the effect is even greater than I expected, and I really like it.
We can now see from your overalls – and your car – that you’re part of the Aston Martin Driver Academy. How does that feel?
It’s definitely a great honour to be racing in these colours and working with the team. I feel it also gives me a real boost of confidence heading into the season.
It must be special to be part of the same team as Fernando Alonso, a two-time world champion.
I’d never actually seen him in real life before. You see him so much on TV, but then when you meet him in person, it’s really special.
What are your targets for the season, and what do you expect from yourself as part of the Aston Martin programme with MP Motorsport?
I think we have a very good car this year — it’s quite competitive. So I’d say my target is to fight for at least a top-three finish in the championship.
