Reza Seewooruthun set the pace in the opening Collective Test session of the weekend at Monza, as the FIA Formula Regional European Championship got underway at the Italian venue today.
The Rodin Motorsport driver posted a best time of 1:45.588 to finish at the top of the timesheets. Having moved into first place during the early stages of the session, the British driver further improved his benchmark with 14 minutes remaining in the opening hour, with no rival able to surpass his effort thereafter.
With 29 of the 30 drivers covered by less than one second, ART Grand Prix Rookie Alexandre Munoz secured second place, just 0.056s adrift of the session leader. The Frenchman arrived at Monza carrying strong momentum following his victory in the most recent round at Spa-Francorchamps at the end of May.
Only 0.002s behind Munoz was MP Motorsport’s Alexander Abkhazava in third, ahead of team-mate Sebastian Wheldon and Trident Motorsport’s Maksimilian Popov. The latter also heads to Monza fresh from his maiden victory, achieved at the Belgian circuit, with all three drivers ending the session within one tenth of Seewooruthun’s benchmark.
Alex Ninovic (Rodin Motorsport), Salim Hanna (PREMA Racing), Marcus Saeter (G4 Racing) and R-ace GP duo Emanuele Olivieri and Championship leader Rashid Al Dhaheri completed the top 10.
The session also marked the championship debut of South Korean driver Kyuho Lee with CL Motorsport. The second two-hour Collective Test session is scheduled to get underway this afternoon at 14:00 local time.
