Sebastian Wheldon set the pace in Friday morning’s Free Practice session at Monza as the fourth round of the FIA Formula Regional European Championship got underway. The MP Motorsport driver posted a best time of 1:45.469, improving by more than a tenth on the benchmark set by Reza Seewooruthun during Thursday’s Collective Test.
Wheldon edged out Alex Ninovic (Rodin Motorsport) by just 0.010s. The Australian had led the timesheets until two minutes before the end, when a red flag brought the session to a premature conclusion.
Maksimilian Popov continued his strong form following his maiden victory at Spa-Francorchamps with Trident Motorsport, securing third place and finishing less than one-and-a-half tenths adrift of Wheldon. Behind him, Mattéo Giaccardi (ART Grand Prix) and Reno Francot (CL Motorsport) were separated by only a fraction as they completed the top five.
MP Motorsport also enjoyed another competitive session with Zhenrui Chi, who topped Thursday afternoon’s Collective Test, and Alexander Abkhazava finishing sixth and seventh respectively.
Alexandre Munoz claimed eighth place for ART Grand Prix and was the fastest Rookie of the session, while Jan Przyrowski (RPM) and Salim Hanna (PREMA Racing) rounded out the top 10.
Track action resumes later today at 16:25 local time with Qualifying 1, where the 30 drivers will be split into Groups A and B.
