Wheldon sets the pace in opening Spa collective test session

Sebastian Wheldon topped the timesheets at the end of the opening collective test session, which kicked off the FIA FREC weekend at Spa today.

The MP Motorsport driver arrived at the legendary Belgian circuit leading the Championship standings after a commanding double victory in the previous round at Zandvoort. The American posted the fastest time of 2:14.653 and emerged as the quickest driver through both the first and second sectors.

With the top 18 drivers covered by just 0.934s, CL Motorsport’s Reno Francot secured second place, ending the session just over a tenth adrift of Wheldon. PREMA Racing’s Kean Nakamura-Berta followed closely behind in third.

Marcus Saeter emerged fourth fastest overall. The G4 Racing driver led a strong Rookie contingent, with Emanuele Olivieri (R-ace GP) and Alexandre Munoz (ART Grand Prix) completing the top three among the newcomers.

Rashid Al Dhaheri (R-ace GP), Jan Przyrowski (RPM), Mattéo Giaccardi (ART Grand Prix) and Kai Daryanani (Trident Motorsport) completed the top 10 in seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth respectively.

The second 90-minute collective test session is set to get underway this afternoon at 13:45 CEST.
